How I got into a top UK university after spending almost all of my life in the middle of nowhere
Dreams do come true. Even somewhere very deep in Eastern Europe.
It is a particularly confusing May of 2012 and I am just about to finish my senior year at a rural Ukrainian high school. Out of a steady three dozen of students who entered its poorly painted walls some years ago, only twelve have made it to graduation.

Despite the embarrassing drop-out numbers (and as a direct result of particularly low managerial expectations), it is revealed to us that we have outperformed the five year plan by 8%. Numbers are regarded highly in Ukraine. Celebrations are at hand.

I take a deep breath before ascending into the hell that any Ukrainian high school graduation ceremony typically is. My goal in general is to survive. My goal in particular is not to burst out laughing. Two hours of humiliation may feel like an eternity, but somehow all the hymn singing, poem declamation, bizarre pagan rituals and Soviet paraphernalia are finally over. My sins are forgiven, my karma is as white as snow before a state inspection and I am ready to move on.

When I applied to study in the UK, most of my outlook on the country still came from my state-provided English work book. At day, I envisioned studying in a medieval castle, adding to my arsenal of self-deprecating jokes, and stocking up on tartan occasion-wear. At night, I pictured practicing my English with the brightest specimen from some broad-shouldered, sexy-back Oxford rowing team. As you can imagine, my parents had a slightly different picture in their minds. They got sold on the idea of a top-notch education that will never go out of style. I don't blame them!
Either way, the agency that sorted out my papers was looking to place me somewhere into an average university in the middle of nowhere in the UK. Just to be safe. You shouldn't really expect much from a village high school graduate, you know?
"My goal in general was to survive. My goal in particular was not to burst out laughing."
Everything changed when my 8.5 IELTS result arrived in early June. Sure, as an immigrant and an international student, having to constantly prove your worth and live up to someone else's standard can be excruciating. But I can not begin to tell you how taking that one last plunge and scoring high at IELTS has made it so much easier for me to finally ratify my ambition.
As soon as I demonstrated that I am up-to-scale with international standards, it was clear to everyone that I was in for the big game.
I have found that universities cared much more about my IELTS score rather than my impeccable grade transcripts. Although I have finished high school with a gold medal for outstanding academic achievements and was awarded an honorary scholarship by the ex-president of Ukraine himself, it was my IELTS result that articulated my success best to the university admissions team abroad.
The truth is, regardless of how well you do in your own country, you have to play by the rules and provide your institution of
choice with something that is scalable across cultures.
IELTS is like a trusted and respected way of saying, Look, OK, I did shepherd geese for a part-time job, but I have also managed to become a near-native English speaker in between my traditional Ukrainian activities.
I knew it was very important to me to score high IELTS, but it took me a few years (and a lot of new acquaintances who were surprised by my exotic origin and wanted to know about my secret of passing up as a Brit), to figure out how I did it.
My result ended up being a mixture of many different things that I instinctively did right. It was a challenge to boil them down into a comprehensive list. But if Moses managed to scribble down some highly tweetable guidelines, why shouldn't I?
My Ten 8.5 IELTS Commandments
1. Thou shalt not study for IELTS in general. Though shall study for the marking criteria in particular.
2. Strategy is key. Winging is an expensive promise of failure. Don't leave your future to chance.
3. Identify your weaknesses, but do not forget to practice your strengths. (Or else, they go rusty and you are screwed!)
4. When you can't study, do some passive learning instead.
5. Practice inner confidence as much as your practice your grammar.
6. The exam is long. Train your body for a marathon, not a short sprint.
7. Remember that 'strong work ethic' that your CV claims you have? You better get it quick. IELTS is the ultimate test for it.
8. Organize your knowledge. Build inter-connected systems, not designated dump areas.
9. Do not self-sabotage. Treat yourself kindly, do not count on test organizers for anything and do not make stupid choices the day before the test.
10. Do not come up with excuses. They simply don't work.
11. Do not invest in IELTS sample tasks. Just torrent that shit. Instead, invest in IELTS strategy.
